From hairdresser to social worker: Bojoura's growth at Welzijn Lelystad

What you learn at school, you can immediately put into practice with us. This is proven by Bojoura Hoekstra. As project manager of the VoorleesExpress and employee of the Dutch Refugee Council, she is committed to connection and opportunities every day. Her career started as a hairdresser, but through voluntary work and internships she developed into a versatile social worker.

Talent and passion

Social work makes our society stronger and more resilient. But the world of care and welfare is changing rapidly. How do we ensure that social work moves with it? And how do we use all the talents available? The story of our colleague Bojoura Hoekstra is a great example. From hairdresser to social worker, from trainee to project leader and supervisor of MBO and HBO students. Her growth shows that level of education does not say it all: talent and passion make the difference.

Fresh perspective

Bojoura collaborated on the e-magazine Action Agenda The Power of dfe mbo social worker. The aim of this magazine is to show why diversity in teams is so important. Not only in terms of background, but also in terms of education. 'MBO social workers bring practical experience, creativity and a fresh outlook. They are close to residents and know what is going on in neighbourhoods and districts'.

Early on, I got the chance to put into practice what I learned at school. Nice that I have now been supervising college and university trainees myself for years.
